Professional Detention Officer Cover Letter Example

Dear Ms. Marva Ringgold,

I am seeking a position as a detention officer and would like to be considered by your agency The GEO Group.

I have an associate’s degree in criminal justice which required me to take corrections courses that explained the correctional department and the requirements of an officer. I am over eighteen years old and am a citizen of this country. I have completed an internship of one quarter at my local police station’s jail and also did another quarter internship with the sheriff’s department.

I understand that there are background checks and other tests that I must pass before being considered for this position. I am also in great physical health and would not have a problem passing any physicals or fitness tests.

I do not get stressed out in many situations and can stay calm and ensure a situation does not get out of hand. My decision making skills are good and I understand that the wrong choice could be deadly in some cases. The main goal of this career is to offer a safe confinement of prisoners who are serving their sentences or in some cases awaiting trial.

I have great written communication skills and understand that writing reports is a part of the job. My verbal communication skills are also very high and I would rather talk out a situation than use force unless it is absolutely necessary.
