An AutoCAD manager supervises the activities of CAD (Computer Aided Design) specialists who design plans and technical drawings used in the manufacturing and construction industries. He or she is responsible for managing and developing procedures geared toward the efficiency of a project development. Most AutoCAD managers work in companies involved in architecture, aeronautics, engineering, electronics, process piping, and product design.

Duties

AutoCAD managers attend to the general administrative tasks of the department from budgeting, scheduling staff, assigning responsibilities and ensuring worker’s tasks are in accordance with company policy and procedures, to producing reports and consulting with superiors and clients. AutoCAD managers are responsible for developing and implementing CAD standards; organizing and providing production support; training in-house staff; setting project timeline and goals; as well as maintaining document archives; managing CAD and other related software vendors. AutoCAD managers also oversee technical configuration and support such as server maintenance, program customizations, plotting, electronic file submissions, and daily backups. They conduct project model reviews and produce corporate CAD screenshots. AutoCAD managers also provide input in business development such as technology adoption, process modification, and system upgrades.

Education and Training Requirements

To become an AutoCAD manager, it is necessary to have a college degree or background in design, drafting, and CAD systems, as well as work experience that required supervisory responsibilities. Some employees may prefer candidates with a bachelor’s degree in engineering and at least 3 years of work experience.
