Duties
The gym manager is responsible for checking the equipment and other facilities offered by the gym. He makes sure that everything is in excellent working condition, and calls maintenance for repairs when necessary. He makes sure that the customers are safe and enjoy their experience at the gym. He is responsible for resolving problems and complaints very quickly. He is responsible for the hiring and the training of the gym staff. He keeps track of their attendance and delegates work to the specific people. He is responsible in training the staff. He serves as a mentor who compliments the staff when appropriate, and reprimands them when needed. He makes sure that the gym staff is dressed properly at all times. The gym manager is the one responsible for the gym’s budget, may it be for the staff’s salaries or equipment that needs to be replaced. The gym manager is also responsible for their marketing strategies like free passes, trial memberships and other promotional offers to help build up the gym’s name.
Education and Training Requirements
A gym manager has to have a bachelor’s degree in sports science, business administration or management. Employers prefer people who graduated with these courses. One must have experience in both business and working at a gym before they can be hired as gym managers. Sometimes, one does not really need a degree. There are times when a high-performing gym employee climbs up the ranks and is promoted to become the gym manager.
Knowledge and Skills Requirements
To become a successful gym manager, one must be interested in health and fitness, and of course, going to the gym. He must be personable and be able to relate with the staff as well as the members. He must be able to communicate and articulate his thoughts well. Extensive knowledge on the use of the facilities and equipment are a must.
Working Conditions
Gym managers often work the standard 40 hours a week, within gym hours. Their work place isn’t limited to the gym, they may need to do presentations for clients about their programs and facilities.
