An aircraft maintenance manager looks after everything that has to do with keeping the aircraft in-check and in pristine condition. He/she knows all kinds of aircraft maintenance; directs and assures that the aircraft technicians provide the best service.

Duties

An aircraft maintenance manager is the one who directs and oversees all the maintenance services given to an aircraft. He makes sure that the aircraft is okay to fly. He makes sure that the plane has gasoline, and doesn’t have leaks. He also makes sure that the engine is working properly. He sees to it that the controls buttons are not busted.

An aircraft maintenance manager oversees the tasks of different aircraft personnel, so he/she must be knowledgeable about the responsibilities of each employee. He/she looks after these people: Airframe mechanics are those who work and repair the hardware of an aircraft. They make sure that the plane won’t come apart. Engine or Powerplant mechanics are those who repair the engine. They look after the generators, hydraulics and everything that has to do with an aircraft’s operation. They make sure that the aircraft is in good running condition. Systems mechanics are the ones who take care of the aircraft doors and how they operate mechanically. They also take care of the flaps, as well as check if the wheels of the aircraft fold in and out with ease. Electricians are those who make sure that all sensors and electronics work properly, especially the radio the pilots use to coordinate.

Education and Training Requirements

An aircraft maintenance manager does not need to have graduated aviation school, but must have a bachelor’s degree in engineering and related courses. He must pass a licensure exam if he wants to move up the ranks.

Knowledge and Skills Requirements

To become a successful aircraft maintenance manager, one must be able to manage a group of people and be a leader. He/she must know how to do the repairs himself/herself. He/she needs to enjoy being around electronic gadgets and testing all the aircrafts controls.

Working Conditions

Unlike most managers, aircraft maintenance managers do not stay in an office 40 hours a week. They work on the field with the rest of the engineers and technicians. Aircraft maintenance managers can find work in airports and facilities that do routine checkups. Sometimes, they can even find jobs in the military to look after their battle aircrafts.
