The purpose of a dental hygienist resignation letter is for the hygienist to resign his or her position. The letter is usually written to the dentist or group of dentists who own the practice. It is important for the dental hygienist resignation letter to be respectful and professional in nature.

This sample dental hygienist resignation letter is written to a dentist from a hygienist who is having a baby and plans to be a stay-at-home mom for a while. The hygienist wishes to leave the door open for a possible return to the dental practice when her new baby is older.

Dear Dr. Richards:

I know that we have verbally discussed my pending resignation so that I can stay at home with my soon to be born little boy. I did, however, want to write a formal letter of resignation to let you know how much I value and appreciate the work experience I have had for the last seven years at XYZ Metropolitan Dental Services. You and your staff have been kind and helpful to me since my very first day. I am grateful for the opportunity afforded me as a brand new hygienist just out of school with no practical work experience. What I have learned in your practice is much more valuable than what school books and classrooms can offer.

During my time at XYZ Metropolitan Dental Services I discovered that I have a passion for working with elderly people. They hold a special place in my heart. That is why I volunteer my services to XYZ City Retirement Home which I find personally rewarding. I plan to continue my volunteer work at the retirement home after the baby is born. If it were not for the diversity of your practice, serving patients aged 3 to 93; I would not have discovered my special affinity for working with elderly dental patients, and for this I will always be grateful.

I also want to reiterate my appreciation for the lovely baby shower you and the staff gave me and all of the wonderful gifts for my little son. They will always be very special to me. I hope to be able to contact you after my son is older in case you have a place for me in your practice. I would love to return to the practice and my job as a dental hygienist in the future should a position be available. Since my last day is a month away, I am more than happy to train my replacement and show her all of the special services provided to patients at XYZ Metropolitan Dental Services.

If you are ever in a bind and need a dental hygienist on short notice, please do not hesitate to call me. I will do everything in my power to arrange to fill in. I intend to maintain my certification and will need to work occasionally to meet the requirements. Thank you again for the last seven years.
