Faculty Appointment Letter
A faculty appointment letter is written to notify a candidate that he or she has been selected to fill a particular position at a university or other academic institution. The position may or may not be a tenure position. The letter is usually written by a person of authority in the hiring department or by the university’s president.
Format and Content:
The faculty appointment letter format is generally formal in tone and includes information regarding tenure, length of appointment term, responsibilities, salaries and benefits, the date the appointment begins, and the date by which the offer must be accepted. The letter may also contain conditions for appointment renewal and information regarding any probationary period. The educational institution may attach other items to the letter that detail the institution’s policies, bylaws and expectations.

This faculty appointment letter sample is issued by the dean of the hiring department. The candidate is told tenure is possible following Board of Trustee review. The candidate is provided with information on her start date, the length of her appointment and given an annual salary in writing.
This letter is to inform you that you have been selected as a professor of Science in the Science and Engineering Department at Green Tree University. You were selected for the position based on your impressive credentials, work history and the awards you have accumulated in the field of science. I have submitted a proposal to appoint you with tenure; however, the final decision on tenure is up to the Board of Trustees.
Your official start date is July 14, 2013. Please report to the Administration Building, Room 304, at 8:00 am, for a meeting with the other faculty members of the Science and Engineering Department. Afterwards, I will meet with you privately. After lunch, you will attend an afternoon orientation. During the orientation, you will learn about the various resources we provide our faculty members as well as about our policies and expectations for new faculty members.
Classes begin on August 23, 2013. You will be expected to utilize our standard curriculum as well as your teaching talents and creativity to make the course a rewarding learning experience for students. The pay for your position is $76,300 per year plus benefits. Until tenure is granted, your appointment is considered without tenure and granted for a two-year term.
