Farewell Job Letter

Almost everybody moves on from their job at one point or another. When you are in that situation, you may desire to wish your former coworkers farewell. A farewell job letter is an expression of thanks and gratitude for everything your coworkers and supervisors have offered to you. This is usually a succinct and heartfelt thanks with a slight nod toward the future. It may also explain who will be moving into your place to minimize confusion moving forward.

Format and Content

Unlike many other letters, the farewell job letter format is designed not specifically for an employer or potential employer but rather for a general audience of peers. The letter should indicate when you will be leaving your current position and should express gratitude as appropriate to the team of individuals you have worked with. If you feel it is appropriate, you can also mention briefly why you are leaving your position and where you will be going. If there is a plan for somebody to replace you, then you should bring that up in your letter as well so your peers know who will be taking your responsibilities. If you wish to be contacted after leaving, you can also leave contact information.

Sample

The letter presented below is from somebody who has served as an administrative assistant for several years and who is choosing to leave her current position to go into business for herself. This farewell job letter sample is targeted toward the employees and immediate supervisors who she has developed a rapport with. In this hypothetical situation, the replacement for the person leaving has not yet been found. However, note that there is information as to who will be taking over certain aspects of the vacated position during the interim. This is an important piece of information because it ensures as smooth a transition as possible and helps maintain good relations with the company after you leave.

To Everybody at Financial Advisors:

I wanted to take a moment to let you know that I am leaving my position as administrative assistant at Financial Advisors, Inc. I am moving into the world of self employment, and my last day will be September 1, 2013.

I have enjoyed my four years at this company and will dearly miss all of you. Thank you for your support, guidance, encouragement, and friendship. I am sure that the company will continue to thrive thanks to everything that you do. Although I am looking forward to my new opportunity, I will miss working with you all and will keep Financial Advisors, Inc. close to my heart.

While a new administrative assistant is being hired to fill my role, you can direct any personnel questions to Marin St. Johns in the Human Resources Department. Day to day operations will be handled by Alma Wynn, who will be filling my role for all other important tasks.

Thank you all once again, and I wish you the best of luck in the future.

Sincerely,

Amelia Smith
