Nanny Termination Letter

A good nanny is worth his or her weight in gold; a nanny who is not can cause family turmoil and undue stress. A well-writtennanny termination letter is a good way to release an individual who fails to live up to your expectations.

Format and Content

Like any employee, a nanny can use the wording of your termination letter to his or her advantage. If the nanny is being dismissed for cause, it is appropriate to say so in the letter, as long as you have documented evidence to prove the allegations. Depending on the relationship, the tone may be friendly or very formal. Always include the date the letter was written, the date of employment termination, and any other relevant information concerning pay and benefits in the nanny termination letter format.

Sample

The individual in thisnanny termination letter sample is dismissed for cause. The mother acknowledges that the nanny has exhibited many positive traits and has performed well in some areas. These positives are negated by the nanny’s failure to supervise the children and to enforce the rules set by the parents. Due to the circumstances, the mother states she will not be writing a recommendation letter for the nanny.

Dear Cynthia,

I am writing this letter to inform you that as of today, August 1, 2013, we will no longer require your services as nanny for our children. You have been our employee for 6 months. During this time, we have experienced a roller coaster of highs and lows due to your job performance. Based on your credentials and recommendations, we believed you would be a good fit for our family. Unfortunately, this has not been the case.

We do not question your love for the children. It is obvious that you care for them deeply. Your due diligence in coordinating their afterschool activities is greatly appreciated, as isthe time you devote to helping the older children with their homework. That being said, there are problems we cannot ignore, such as the flagrant way you dismiss and disregard our parenting philosophy.

When you were hired, we presented you with a document that detailed our parenting style, our beliefs, and our goals for our children. On 3 occasions, you allowed the children to watch television programming that contained violent content and vulgar language. At the park yesterday, you failed to watch the twins and Jeffery wandered a considerable distance before he was spotted by a police officer. We have obtained copies of the eyewitness reports. Eachclaimedthat at the time of the incident, you were talking on your cell phone with your back to the playground area.

In addition to the above, you have criticized and downplayed our rules in your conversations with the children and during your telephone conversations with others. We have captured a few of these conversations on the nanny cam. Although we are fond of you, the negatives clearly outweigh the positives. As per our contract, we are giving you 2 weeks’ severance pay, which you will receive after you sign and date the enclosed waiver release form. You will receive your final paycheck with this letter. I am not enclosing a recommendation letter but I wish you the best going forward.

Sincerely,

JoAnn Johnson
