Academic Application Letter

Dear Professor Randall,

I am writing to express my interest in the assistant professorship positionin the English Department at the Graduate School of New York University posted in the April Job List of the Modern Language Association.I am an alumnus of New York University and earned myMaster of Arts in Teaching English in 2000 and my Doctor of Education (Ed.D) in 2004. I have taught English Literature at the University of Mathesonfor the last 8 years. My dissertation, “The Role of the English Language in Culture” focuses on the economic and aesthetic uses of the English language in past and modern societies.

I believe that student-centered teaching encourages learning and the development of leadership skills. I prefer a dynamic student-teacher dialogue that explores the topic thoroughly and inspires students to think beyond the borders of the textbook. I utilize small group projects that foster collaborative input as well and team cooperation. Student confidence is bolstered by whole class discussions, which allow students to voice their opinion while learning from the opinion of others.

I strongly believe my education, practical experience and career goals are a good fit for the position requirements outlined in the job posting. I possess a deep love of the English language and am eager to share my knowledge with students at the university level. I have excellent leadership skills and I work very effectively as a sole contributor and in team environments. I am motivated by challenge and I am constantly looking for new ways to improve my teaching skills. I believe in continual learning as a way of life.

I would welcome the opportunity to interview with you and discuss my suitability for this position in detail. I am enclosing a copy of mycurriculum vitae.
