Maternity Leave Letter to Parents

Teachers, daycare operators, and others who work with children for a living are used to communicating with parents on a regular basis to build rapport and stay up to date on each child’s progress. When the time comes for a teacher to add her own child into her life, it is necessary to send a formal maternity leave letter to all of parents of the children she works with to ensure that as a professional nobody is left out of the loop during her time of maternity leave.

Format and Content

The proper maternity leave letter to parents format may address either all of the parents or individual families depending on personal preference. You should give a brief announcement of your pregnancy and clearly state the date you will go on leave and the date you plan to return. In addition, you should also give a brief introduction of the person who will be substituting for you in your absence, including his or her name and credentials. Use a formal but concise writing style while also paying attention to proper grammar.

Sample

This is a maternity leave letter to parents sample written by a sixth grade science teacher shortly after she has announced her pregnancy. She plans to go on maternity leave a few weeks before her due date and return to her classroom when her child is 6 weeks old. She sends this letter to the parents of her students to inform them of the situation as well as provide information on who will be substituting for her during her leave.

Dear Parents,

I would like to inform you all of the happy news of my pregnancy and that I will consequently be going on maternity leave starting on January 21, 2014. Barring any complications, I am planning to return to the classroom on March 25, 2014. I will miss each one of my students while I am away on maternity leave, but trust that they will continue to thrive under the guidance of my substitute.

In my absence, Mr. Joshua Greeley will be teaching my class. He is a certified teacher with a degree in science education and some of you may already be familiar with him as he has substituted for me a few times in the past. I feel confident that he will be a good fit for the needs of my students. He also has my contact information if any help with the class is needed while I am gone.

During my time of maternity leave, I will be happy to continue to answer emails and phone calls from students and parents. If you have any questions, comments or concerns, please feel free to leave me a message by phone at (555)-555-5555 or by email at [email] I look forward to seeing you all again when I return to the classroom and returning to work with your children.

Yours sincerely,

Karen Adame
