Teacher Application Letter

The teacher application letter is used as a cover letter when applying for a teaching position. It may be addressed to a particular individual at a school or to the district school board. The letter is often sent with copies of your teaching certifications and a sealed copy of your official transcript.

Format and Content

Use the letter to capture the interest of a potential employer. Highlight your teaching credentials, experience and achievements in the classroom. Include information you feel is highly relevant to the teaching position you are seeking. Use the teacher application letter format to break the letter into sections, beginning with an introduction and purpose statement and concluding with a request for an interview.

Sample

This teacher application letter sample is written by an experienced teacher who is moving to a new city and wishes to secure a teaching position in the local school district. She expresses her desire to teach a specific discipline at the elementary grade level. She suggests the possibility of teaching in another area by listing all of her teaching certifications and areas of specialization.

Dear Mr. Anderson,

I am interested in applying for a teaching position within your school district. I am currently teaching fifth grade science at Pearson Elementary in Ocala, Florida. I will be moving to the Miami area during the summer and wish to continue my teaching career at the elementary school level. I am certified by the state of Florida to teach at all grade levels; however, I most enjoy introducing young students to the wonders of science. I also enjoy helping special needs children reach their full potential and I am open to a teaching assignment in this area as well.

I have been teaching in Florida for more than a decade, with the majority of my career spent at the elementary school level. I spent the first several years of my career teaching special needs students at the high school level. I graduated from Northwest University in 2002 with a Bachelor’s degree in Childhood Development and Psychology and I have certifications in Exceptional Student Education and Foundations of Special Education. I am certified to teach Earth-Space Science, Biology, Chemistry, Mathematics and Exceptional Student Education.

I believe I have much to offer the children of the Wishaw School District. I am passionate about the importance of education and I am extremely proud to be a part of this noble profession. I utilize hands-on and group participation teaching methods to inspire my students to succeed. I believe these methods capture the interest of students who would otherwise show no interest in math and science. Over the years, my students have consistently earned recognition and awards at science fairs at the district and national level.
